A bright future for wild salmon in Alaska:Fishing management setting an international example for others to follow
Salmon love Alaska! Indeed, the northern-most state of the United States is a veritable Eldorado for them. Isolated from the rest of the world, Alaska boasts some of the most natural and cleanest marine habitats anywhere on earth. In this nourishment-rich oceanic environment into which more than 3,000 rivers flow from clean sources, Alaskan wild salmon grow and develop throughout their natural life cycle. They form part of a living eco-system and feed solely from natural sources such as plankton, shrimps, herring and other forms of sea life. This is one of the reasons for their special quality! Alaskan wild salmon is known for its firm texture, its high nutritional value and its intensive colouring caused by the intake of krill and crustaceans.
Fish and fishers alike benefit from controlled fishing quotas
Sustainable fishing is the secret to this steady wealth of wild salmon and seafood. Alaska has achieved success unrivalled anywhere in the world in effective fishing management, in which the protection of the environment and preservation of fish numbers take precedence over commerce. As early as in 1959, when the state was first established, there was a clear sense of responsibility stemming from the awareness that healthy ecosystems and protected habitats for wild fish were crucial for the social and economic wellbeing of future generations.
In accordance with the principle of utilising, developing and preserving fish to ensure sustainable yields, salmon fishing is regulated and overseen using a fishing management system which is unrivalled anywhere in the world. Alaska has set exemplary international standards. The programme includes restricted fishing regions and times, annual reviews of reserves and the health condition of each individual species of fish, the imposition of fishing quotas, efforts to reduce unwanted catches and bans on certain types of fishing equipment. Thanks to this effective fishing management, no salmon stocks are considered to be overfished or at threat. On the contrary, Alaskan salmon stocks have been growing steadily for more than three decades. This means bright prospects for wild salmon, fishers and future generations - because everyone benefits from sustainable fishing.
“Pure unadulterated nature” – FRIEDRICHS Wild Salmon from Alaska
Way back in 1914, Gottfried Friedrichs was one of the first companies to start importing salmon from Alaska to Germany. Today, we have a wide range of MSC-certified Alaskan salmon:

healthy and tastyAlaskan Wild Salmon
Our Kodiak Wild Salmon is a pure natural product. It contains less fat (approx. 4 to 5 percent) but is particularly firm and tasty. Pacific wild salmon swims in the Arctic Sea, one of the cleanest and clearest stretches of water anywhere in the world. It predominantly feeds on krill, to which it owes its strong reddish colour, which can vary depending on the type of nourishment.
Limited and gentle catchesTrolling
Salmon is caught for FRIEDRICHS in strictly limited quotas in the Gulf of Alaska in the north starting from the small island of Kodiak. The fish used for FRIEDRICHS Kodiak Wild Salmon smoked are trolled using fishing rods: small fishing boats with a crew of only 1 or 2 catch the salmon one by one. Trolling is particularly gentle on the fish, ensuring that their meat remains extremely tasty. In fact, this method produces yields of only around 100 to 150 fish per day.
ProcessingFriedrichs quality
Much of the processing which Alaska wild salmon undergoes at Gottfried Friedrichs is done by hand. Thus, for example, the salmon is additionally dry-salted by hand and enhanced with natural ingredients such as smoke or herbs according to traditional recipes. The bones are also removed by hand to avoid damaging the delicate meat.
The range of fish is enormous. Consumers are able to select from fish products from all around the world in all qualities and forms. But for how much longer?
